Phuket Tours

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

For many, the main incentive to spend a holiday in Phuket is the incredibly wide reach of activities the island has to offer. Not only that, but with an encyclopaedia-long list of hotels and accommodation as well as startling scenery and seascapes, Phuket is a dream destination.

The island’s west coast has long been the ‘tourism side’ of the island, but nowadays the east coast and even some inland districts have been developed with new resorts springing up all the time. In spite of this, Phuket never feels crowded because of its size and pockets of tranquillity can easily be found.

Phuket’s got it all and knows it. Why not take a sunset dinner cruise on a wooden Junk underneath a canopy of a million stars? You can in Phuket. You’d like to ride an ATV through a muddy field or go on a cultural tour?

Ladyboy Cabaret is popular and hilarious, and it’s equally as easy to see elephants on stage too. As for daytime activities, you can zoom over to Phi Phi on a speedboat, visit the world-famous caves or ‘hongs’ of Phang Nga Bay or ride an elephant through the jungle. It’s only a matter of arranging it in Phuket.
Phang Nga Bay Sea Canoe

One of the most popular day tours in the area, the Phang Nga Bay Sea Canoe tour involves an 08:30 pickup and a drive to the East Coast of Phuket where a ‘mother ship’ will take you up to the hongs, or caves of Phang Nga Bay. When tidal conditions are right a guide will paddle you to the centre of the hongs where a whole eco-system exists.

Monkeys and hornbills live inside, undisturbed by the outside world. The mother ship then takes you to another cave and after, a buffet lunch is served. In the afternoon you will explore another cave then be motored to a beach and back to port.
Phi Phi by Speedboat

Phi Phi is one of the world’s most beautiful islands, from Phuket you can visit for the day. The first stop off is at Monkey Bay for some terrific snorkeling (although some tours will go first to Maya Bay). The fabulous coral garden of Hin Klang is next, followed by a beach break at Bamboo Island.

By this time it’s lunchtime and a buffet on Phi Phi Don handles it well.  After lunch, the boat heads to uninhabited Phi Phi Leh then to Maya Bay – famous as the location of ‘The Beach’ movie before speeding back to Phuket.

Phuket FantaSea

An multi-award-winning attraction park and cabaret show, FantaSea is built on 140 acres of land in Kamala and encompasses games, shopping handicrafts, a 4,000-seater buffet featuring Thai and international cuisine, cafés and extravaganzas.

The show itself almost defies description as it is a melange of Thai culture, fantasy, excellent choreography, pyrotechnics, performing animals, acrobatics, trapeze artistes, fight scenes and historical re-enactments. The audience sometimes gets lost in and a little bewildered by the eclectic plot but all agree that it’s a wonderful evening out.
James Bond Island & Hongs

This tour combines the wonderfully shaped limestone ‘karsts’ or caves of Phang Nga Bay with a trip to James Bond Island and lunch on board ship in the north of the bay. On the way back you will stop at Lawa Island in the south of the bay for an hour’s swimming.

Of course, the best part of the day is getting to explore the sea caves and witnessing the eco system inside the heart of the karsts. James Bond Island is so-named because it featured in 1974’s Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. Great sights, great food.

Other Tours

Phuket has several elephant camps along its west coast where you can trek on a jumbo through the ‘jungle’. There are also excellent tours to neighbouring Phang Nga Province that take in elephant trekking, white-water rafting and visiting a fishery as well as ATV tours both on and off Phuket.

The romantic sunset dinner cruise in Phang Nga Bay is a popular one aboard a genuine converted rice junk under a panoply of stars and John Gray’s Sea Kayaking Hong by Starlight is excellent and eco-friendly. Not strictly a tour but worth mentioning are Phuket’s six lush and verdant golf courses.

Phuket Beaches

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

Ah, those beaches. If you’re looking for the stereotypical palm-lined white-sand beaches featured in those doorstop holiday brochures then Phuket is for you. The West Coast is generally where to find the best beaches whereas the eastern side of Phuket features mud flats at low tide.

The troika of Patong, Karon and Kata beaches is where the majority of holidaymakers stay and play but there are many more coastal gems to enjoy. From the open spaces of Mai Khao Beach to the fun-filled, restaurant-lined Laem Singh there is something for everyone here, especially if you have your own transportation with which to explore the island.
Patong Beach

Patong is crazy, full on, eclectic, brash and, according to your personal tastes, either heaven or hell. By day, the beach is a mish-mash of hawkers, sun beds, jet-skis, paragliders, water toys and tanning bodies. By night the streets are alive with shoppers and fun seekers and the bars noisy and riotous.

There is a great range of restaurants to choose from and there’s a bar for every taste, from innocent but fun Irish pubs to far-from-innocent Go-Go’s and ‘bar beers’. Patong also features several discos/clubs and some pretty good live music venues and the action goes on till late.
Karon Beach

Karon is a long, banana-shaped beach with squeaky white sand, little shade and a lot of space in which to spread yourself out in. The area is much more spacious than sometimes overcrowded Patong which lies some three kilometres away over Karon Hill and the general atmosphere a lot less frantic.

Nightlife, too, is like a more gentile version of Patong’s with a main street and side ’sois’ lined with restaurants, bars and guesthouses. There is a shopping bazaar along the beach road and lots of shopping opportunities in Karon centre. Karon is a good, centrally located beach to stay.
Kata Beach

Kata Beach could win a beauty contest. Palm lined with a small island offshore, it is ideal for watersports – especially surfing from May to October.

There are numerous shopping alleys and the main street is lined with outlets selling just about everything from Thai textiles to snorkels. As regards nightlife; Kata features an ‘entertainment plaza’ with a veritable maze of bars, some girlie some not. Towards the southern end there is a concentration of restaurants and massage parlours. The beach itself is busy in high season and idyllic in low season and features an attractive and shaded beach road.
Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao is a long (six kilometre) beach and is home to the large Laguna Complex. Deserted and spacious in its northern part, this is where to go if you seek seaside solitude. Further south, the beach’s hotels tend to stamp their mark on it, in that their sun loungers are for the exclusive use of hotel guests but on the other hand hotel satellite businesses such as masseuses and restaurants are there for all.

Nightlife is centred on Tinlay Place, located near the entrance to the Laguna in nearby Cherng Talay. Here, you’ll find a pleasant mixture of fine dining and pubs.
Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach lies north of Patong over a spectacular hill and life there is much mellower than in Party Town. Restaurants and shops line the atmospheric village’s beachside roads, and the main north-south thoroughfare also features bars. Like many West Coast beaches, swimming can be dangerous at times from May to November at Kamala so care should be taken, although surfing is good at the northern end of the beach.

Kamala’s a great place to dine out with its many seafood outlets and although the action may not be as hot as in Patong, a certain charm pervades the place.  Kamala is also home to Phuket’s biggest attraction, the cultural extravaganza FantaSea.
Nai Harn Beach

Nai Harn Beach in the south of the island is gradually growing in popularity and both Paradise and Freedom beaches on the headland just south of Patong are both little revelations of sandy beauty.

Other Beaches

There is only one swimmable East Coast Beach and that is Laem Ka in the south of Phuket – it is notable for the deep hue of its waters on a sunny afternoon. It is definitely worthwhile to hire a vehicle or/and a driver and explore Phuket’s West Coast Beaches and you will see exactly why the island has earned its moniker ‘The Pearl of the Andaman’.

What to See in Phuket

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

For many, the first glimpse of Thailand through the taxi’s windows on the ride from the airport to their accommodation is a cultural eye-opener. First-time visitors are fascinated by the sights, sounds and exotic smells of Phuket and can’t get enough. Yet there is more to see as the island has beautiful Buddhist temples, stunning cabaret shows and magnificent sunsets as well as that most welcoming of sights – the Thai smile.

If there is one accessory that is essential when visiting Phuket it is a camera in order to capture as many images a possible of this fascinating and rewarding place.
Wat Chalong and Temples of Phuket

The most important of the 29 Buddhist temples in Phuket, Wat Chalong is located in the centre of the island near the port of Chalong.  It is dedicated to two highly venerable monks, Luang Pho Chuang and Luang Pho Chaem who, with their knowledge of herbal medicine, helped the injured of a Chinese coolie tin miners’ rebellion in 1876.

There’s no charge to enter but donations towards the temple’s upkeep are welcome. In keeping with Buddhist beliefs visitors should dress respectfully and remove shoes before entering the temple. A final word of caution: women should never touch a monk.
Old Phuket Town

As you travel around the island you will notice a rich mixture of cultures and traditions. The many Chinese who made Phuket their home some 200 years ago have helped influence the architecture in Phuket Town, with its ‘Sino-Portugese’ colonial look.

Phuket FantaSea

An award-winning attraction park and cabaret show, FantaSea is built on 140 acres of land in Kamala and encompasses games, shopping handicrafts, a 4,000-seater buffet featuring Thai and international cuisine, cafés and extravaganzas.

From the creators of Bangkok’s Safari World, FantaSea spares no expense in impressing and dazzling visitors.
Soi Bangla

Soi Bangla is not for the faint hearted or the conservatives of this world. Bangla is the stomping ground of vividly dressed and pneumatically bosomed ‘katoeys’ or ladyboys as well as extremely friendly girls who use every trick in the book (and some that are not) to entice passers by into their bars for a drink and maybe more.

What people tend overlook, however, is that Bangla is also a good place to buy DVD’s, music CD’s, computer games, fake designer clothes and bags. There are also a couple of good live music venues and sports bars. Bangla may not be the epicentre of fine dining in Patong but it’s great for people watching.
Simon Cabaret

Long an institution in Phuket, Simon Cabaret, a transvestite and transsexual Vegas-style show had humble beginnings in a shophouse and nowadays is a glitzy venue that draws busloads of curious sightseers. The show itself is nothing to write home about – lip synching pop songs and cabaret tunes – but the costumes and stage management are admirable and worth a trip to see.

One of the most amusing aspects of the evening is the audience reaction. The many upturned faces raptly watching the show, trying to imagine these regal and graceful dancers as men is a show in itself. Photo opportunities are possible after the show.

What to Do in Phuket

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

As much as it’s tempting to simply laze on Phuket’s white-sand beaches, gazing out over the Andaman, it really does pay to take advantage of the many tours and activities on offer here.

Next to Phuket is Phang Nga province, which is a veritable cornucopia of beautiful nature trails, national parks and vistas. Phang Nga Bay, which flanks the east coast of Phuket Island, ranks as one of the most striking tourist attractions in the world and tours around the karst rockfaces – hollowed out limestone formations – are simply awesome.

The elephant, one of Thailand’s most endearing symbols, provides the legwork for the many jungle trips and tours available.
Phang Nga Bay Sea Canoe

There are several companies offering sea cave kayaking tours from Phuket to nearby Phang Nga Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the departure point, the ‘mother ship’, which also carrys the kayaks, takes you to limestone islands that, over time, have collapsed into themselves leaving the interior intact and untouched over many years.

Sea caves lead into these lagoons and when tide conditions are right and the result is like a visit to a parallel world where time has stood still. Tours visit several of these sites, lunch is provided.

Phi Phi Daytrip

Phi Phi Island is outstandingly beautiful and well worth a visit. Tour boats usually drop passengers off at Phi Phi’s Ton Sai Bay then circle Phi Phi Ley, an uninhabited but impressive nearby island.

The boat then heads to Maya Bay – the location of the movie ‘The Beach’ where passengers have the opportunity to snorkel among the colourful tropical fish and the wonderful coral. Buffet lunch on Phi Phi follows with a chance to wander through the island’s shopping alleys or to do a bit of swimming at stunning Loh Dalum Bay before heading back to Phuket.
Elephant Trekking

Whether in Phang Nga Province, or in Phuket itself, elephant trekking is enormous fun and a memorable experience.  Regulated and controlled elephant trekking is actually beneficial to these gentle beasts because, since the demise of the logging industry, begging for food looked more and more like their fate.

The tourist industry therefore represents a way to keep them employed and fed. It’s expensive to keep an elephant in captivity and, as elephants love to work, you’re actually doing them a favour through your presence. Learn just how dainty on their feet these creatures can be.
Phuket Spas

The art of massage and aromatherapy is an ancient one in Thailand. Massage techniques are taught, not just to give pleasure but to enhance healing therapies.

Today, Phuket boasts a slew of top-end spas that offer everything from a simple massage to days-long packages that will have you feeling better than you ever have before. Mid-range spas offer value for money and deliver good therapies. Typically, a few minutes in a steam room is enough to open up your pores, then a massage is administered and after that a body wrap or scrub. Go for it; you won’t regret it.
Golf in Phuket

There are six excellent golf courses in Phuket with one on the way. Some local expatriates have moved here solely for the game and visitors are spoilt for choice with green fees being substantially lower than in the west.

All the big names have played here in tournaments and some have even come unstuck at some of Phuket’s golf traps. Full facilities are available with specially designed golf carts delivering refreshments to thirsty players. One of the most unique features of golfing in Phuket is that all the caddies are female – a not unwelcome notion for many male golfers.

Phuket Dining and Restaurants

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

From top end to street stall dining, Phuket has it all… and then some. It’s often been said that half the population of this island is eating while the other half is cooking for them. Of course, local food is a lot more genuine (and cheap) away from tourist centres but Patong, Karon and Kata all have excellent international restaurants catering for the many different nationalities visiting Phuket.

Dining with a view is not a luxury here – more of an easy option – and high-end dining with a fantastic view a definite possibility at several different locations. Bon appetite!
What to Eat in Phuket

When in Rome… Cheap ‘normal’ Thai restaurants are everywhere in Phuket and the best measure of whether they’re good or not is if they are busy or quiet. Fresh seafood is the primary draw for diners on the island and there is plenty of it to choose from in the many ice-filled ‘display boats’ along the West Coast’s busier stretches. Patong also features a line of seafood restaurants on Rat-U-Thit Road.

Steaks and red meat dishes are very reasonably priced compared to western standards and you’re never too far from an Italian or Mexican restaurant wherever you are on the West Coast.
Where to Eat in Phuket

Decisions, decisions… For most people, their location decides for them but others are willing to travel for quality at the dinner table. Some of the best restaurants in Patong are: Da Maurizio’s, the next-door Joe’s Downstairs, The 9th Floor, Jean-Pierre in BYD Lofts, Sala Bua in Impiana Cabana, Sam’s Steaks in the Holiday Inn, Floyd’s Brasserie in Burasari. Pub Grub is good at Scruffy Murphy’s and Molly Malone’s.

In the Kata-Karon area, The Boathouse does fine dining in style, diagonally opposite is Two Chefs, while round the corner look for signs for La Cappanina. Ratri ‘Jazztaurant’ up on the hill overlooking Kata is also recommendable as is Karon Café.

Phuket Nightlife

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

It’s not all naughty in Phuket and there’s a lot more to do than getting down and dirty along Patong’s Bangla Road, however much fun it can be as a one-off. Nights under tropical starry skies tend to take on a magical quality and dining out al fresco enjoying balmy sea breezes is a definitely holiday enhancer.

Phuket’s two Las Vegas-style shows, FantaSea and Simon Cabaret, are both a barrel of laughs for very different reasons while ‘Hong by Starlight’ sea cave exploration trips are simply unforgettable.
Soi Bangla and Patong Beach

Soi Bangla is the epicenter of nightlife in Phuket, the stomping ground of vividly dressed and pneumatically bosomed ‘katoeys’ or ladyboys as well as extremely friendly girls who use every trick in the book (and some that are not) to entice passers by into their bars for a drink and maybe more.

You see people of all ages having fun here including families with children, also a good place to buy DVD’s, CD’s, computer games, fake designer clothes and bags. There are also a couple of good live music venues and sports bars. Bangla may not be the epicentre of fine dining in Patong but it’s great for people watching.
Simon Cabaret

Call them ladyboys, ‘katoeys’ transvestites or whatever, they put on a great show of dancing and lip syncing in a swirl of colour and a gust of perfume. In tolerant Thailand, due to the culture, the theatrical performances of men dressed as women has always been accepted and a great number of males who feel more natural as females, find a career as cabaret performers.

Expect extravagant costumes, much preening and cabaret numbers from over the years and do keep an eye on the audience seated around you: their fascinated faces are often as amusing as the entertainment on the stage.

Dining Out in Phuket

Phuket is blessed with some of the best fine dining opportunities in Thailand. Not only is the food of a high standard, the views from some of the West Coast beach restaurants would put many other destinations to shame.

For visitors who are a little more adventurous it’s always fun to go local and you’ll certainly be made welcome in the many Thai restaurants around the island. Eating out is such an intregal part of Thai culture; indeed a standard Thai greeting translates as ‘Have you eaten yet?’ So go with the flow and get out and enjoy the wonderful dining opportunities here.

Shopping in Phuket

January 5th, 2010 by newtrip4u

Street markets, designer shops, huge malls and mom & pop stores – they’re all here selling everything from antiques just a few weeks old to genuine gems to fake designer clothes to the real thing. It can get confusing at times but ultimately the quality inspector is you.

One of the prerequisites of coming to Thailand is to arrive with empty suitcases, or even buy your suitcases here. Expect to bargain, always keep a calm attitude and a smile on your face and you will come out a winner. Buying several items at the same time is another good way to lower the price.
What to Buy

Generally speaking, there are two main favourite catagories on shoppers’ lists: designer clothes/accessories and pirated movies, CD’s and computer games. For the average mortal these are about as easy to come across in Phuket as a hamburger in MacDonald’s.

However, if you are looking for good quality watches prices are lower than in the west. Fake ‘antiques’ are plentiful but just don’t go paying real antique prices for them. To sum up: the sky is the limit when shopping in Phuket.

Where to Shop in Phuket

There are four main shopping malls in Phuket: Jungceylon in Patong and over the hill, Big C, Tesco Lotus and Central Festival just outside Phuket Town. Of these, Jungceylon and Central Festival have the widest choices.

Patong has a bazaar-like feel to it with its many street stalls. Many visitors find it overbearing but the tougher, more experienced shopper/haggler can find some worthwhile items at reasonable prices along Patong’s streets. Even beachgoers in their sun loungers cannot escape the ambulant sarong, batik and bedcover-sellers so take some cash along with you if you are on the lookout for a beach bargain.
